“I’d have had my mouth on you, Frankie,” she whispered, voice like smoke. “I’d have tasted you.”

Frankie’s breath caught. It wasn’t the tequila that made her dizzy, it was this — this unshakable, undeniable heat that rattled her bones. Something inside her broke loose, something she’d locked away for years.

“I like girls,” she whispered back, trembling with the truth. “I always have.”

Silence stretched after Frankie’s whisper. Her pulse roared in her ears. She hadn’t even meant to say it — not out loud, not ever. But there it was, trembling in the dark, and she felt something inside her uncoil at last. Her chest loosened. For the first time in years, she could breathe.

Vera’s eyes were on her, sharp as always, but softened at the edges. She didn’t look surprised. If anything, she looked… proud.

“About damn time you said it,” Vera murmured, voice low, not mocking. Just certain. And she was right.

She still could hardly believe she’d said it out loud. The weight she’d carried for years felt a little lighter, the air a little easier to breathe. Vera studied her for a beat and then held out her hand.

“You want to keep dancing, Frank?”

The night stretched on, and Frankie still couldn’t stop smiling. The tequila had warmed her from the inside out, like swallowing the sun. She’d never tasted anything like it — sharp, smoky, golden. But it was so much more than that. Even if her secret was just shared among a few women it still made her chest feel so light.

Vera had just excused herself to the bathroom when Frankie felt a tug at her sleeve.

She turned to find Ingrid standing there, cheeks flushed, a shot glass in each hand. The stoic German grinned with surprising warmth, then looped her arm through Frankie’s.

Without a word, they tipped each other’s glasses into each other’s mouths, tequila spilling past their lips in a smooth amber burn. Frankie choked a little and coughed. Ingrid laughed and patted her back.

“You’re an amazing pilot,” Ingrid said, the slightest slur touching her clipped accent.

Frankie nodded, still catching her breath. “And so are you.”

“You’re a graceful winner — an example for us all. As the British would say.” Ingrid rolled her eyes. “Though I’m not fond of them.”

She leaned in conspiratorially. “Do you know why the sun never sets on the British Empire?”

Frankie shook her head.

“Because God doesn’t trust the British in the dark, Frankie.”

They both laughed, though Frankie wasn’t entirely sure why. The tequila helped.

“Do you follow European politics?” Ingrid asked suddenly, her smile tilting.

Frankie shrugged. “There’s enough politics in this country to keep me busy.”

“There’s a man I think you should meet,” Ingrid said, a little more serious now. “He’s a rising leader — someone who will restore dignity to my country. I’m told he’s been following this race.”

Frankie blinked, surprised. “Me? Why?”

“You inspire people,” Ingrid said softly. “Just like he does. I think you’d understand each other.”

Frankie flushed, unsure how to respond. “Well… I’ve never been across the pond. But I’m honored you think I’d be worth introducing to someone like that.
